Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does IEC need to be renewed annually?

The IEC itself carries lifetime validity and does not expire, but since 2021 the DGFT requires every IEC holder to complete an annual online update between April and June each year, even where no details have changed. Failure to do so results in deactivation, though the IEC can be reactivated later by completing the pending update.

Can a single business entity hold more than one IEC?

No. Since the IEC system is PAN-based, only one IEC can be issued against a single PAN, so a business with multiple branches or divisions typically operates under one IEC rather than obtaining separate codes for each unit.

What happens if goods are imported or exported without a valid IEC?

Import or export activity carried out without a valid IEC can be treated as unauthorized under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992, potentially leading to shipment holds at customs, denial of banking remittances, and penal action by the DGFT.

Is GST registration a prerequisite for obtaining an IEC?

No, GST registration is not a mandatory prerequisite for IEC application -- the two registrations serve different purposes and can be obtained independently, though GSTIN details are typically linked to the IEC record where the applicant is GST-registered.

Is IEC required for service exporters who don't physically ship goods?

Certain categories of service exporters receiving foreign currency payments through normal banking channels are exempted from mandatory IEC under specific RBI/DGFT provisions, but in practice most consulting and freelance service exporters obtain an IEC anyway, since banks and DGFT scheme applications often ask for one.

Do you offer a free legal consultation for IEC registration?

Yes, an initial consultation is available to discuss IEC applicability, documentation, and the annual update requirement. You can call +91-9815580037 and ask for Mr. Harish Tiwari to schedule a discussion with the team.
